Find My Mac not available after 10.7.2 software update

scouture October 13, 2011 0

Many people have been reporting problems getting Find My Mac to work after updating to Lion 10.7.2. The iCloud panel shows a “Recovery system update required” messge and clicking the Update button tells you your Software is up to date. Strange?

This could be happening for a number of reasons. In this guide we’ll walk you through how to troubleshoot Find My Mac and get it working properly.

How to fix “Recovery system update required” Find My Mac Error

Solution 1: Enable Location Services

Let’s get the Duh! problem out the way first. Find My Mac may be behaving strangely because Location Services are not enabled. To enable them, launch System Preferences, go to the Privacy tab of the Security & Privacy panel and make sure Enable Location Services is checked.

Solution 2: Reinstall Lion Recovery Update

Apple may be experiencing some server issues which is impacting the Software Update feature in Lion.

Head to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464, download the Lion Recovery Update v.1.0 package and install it manually. Reboot your Mac. In most cases, this will get Find My Mac working. If not, try the following tip.

Solution 3: Repair Disk and Reinstall Client Combo Update

Step 1: Launch the Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities), select your Startup Disk from the list and click Verify Disk. There is a good chance you get this error message once the verification is complete.

Step 2: Boot into the Recovery Partition by restarting your Mac while holding the alt/option key. When the Mac OS X Utilities window appears, select Disk Utility from the list. This time run Repair Disk. Re-boot back into Lion once this is done.

Step 3: After having re-booted into Lion, run Disk Utility again but this time run Repair Disk Permissions on your Startup Disk.

Step 4: Download and re-install the OS X Lion Update 10.7.1 Client Combo: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459
